It seems more and more that people are just too busy to eat dinner these days. Between work and soccer practice, we donít have time to cook. By the time dinner rolls around we are too tired and too often make the choice to keep it simple by paying to have someone else do the cooking and the cleaning. Sounds easy but we are actually sacrificing our health for convenience. If you have ever looked at the nutrition facts page for a restaurant then you know what I am talking about. The food at a restaurant is loaded with as much as 50% more calories, fat, and sodium than if you were to cook the same meal at home. Often the calories in one meal from a restaurant are as much as a person should have for an entire day.
There are many advantages to cooking at home. Starting with the fact that a person who cooks at home knows exactly what is in the food they are eating, from allergies to spit. When a person eats out there is no way to know what is in the food they are eating. When you start cooking at home you will notice many differences such as having more energy due to eating a healthier diet. Not to mention a reduced risk of cancer. Studies show that 1/3 of cancers are related to diet. Cooking at home is the perfect opportunity to teach your kids many things from how to cook to family values since they will be spending more quality time with you.
If you are a very busy family that is short on time, take one day a week to cook many meals that you can put in the freezer to take out one day at a time and heat for a quick homemade meal. This will also work if you live alone or there are only two of you and you donít like all the work it takes to cook such small meals. You can cook larger meals and freeze smaller portions to take out and heat up later. The main thing to remember is to stay organized by planning meals and shoping weekly to save much needed time when there just isnít enough. If you must eat out, even for just an occasional treat, make sure you read the nutrition facts online before you go. This will help you to make smart decisions while you are there and eat a healthier diet.
